Bar Tab: Licorería Limantour, Mexico City

From a front like two shipping containers that have been slotted into the ground floor of an office block and given an ivy fringe, the Limantour clientele spills onto the pavement every evening. And for good reason. This is a bar that is praised for singlehandedly invigorating the Mexico City cocktail scene, and which scoops up awards at every opportunity, with Best Bar in North America and Legend of the List added in 2022 – its eighth consecutive year on the World’s 50 Best list. The bar’s success has spawned countless imitators, but the solid post-work-crowd on a recent Tuesday evening suggests the original remains unsurpassed for the sharply dressed corporate types. Here they flock to avail themselves of Martinis, the winter sun – which dapples the tables of the street-facing terrace – and a quick shoe shine from a passing vendor. Inside, the vibe is more reserved, no sunlight, no shoe shine, but the high seats near the bar come at a premium nonetheless. Dispatched to a relatively soulless back room, a table of four leafs through the opulent menu with images of jungle, undergrowth and other shady places. Having chosen four different drinks, they celebrate them all as outstanding, with the classic Margarita al Pastor (tequila, triple sec, taco mix, and lime) and the Lobster Mushroom (lobster mushroom and butter infused whisky, sweet vermouth, Empirical Ayuuk and PX sherry – no shellfish) the stars. Just don’t ask about air miles on the Lobster Mushroom – taking Pasilla Mixe chile from the mountains of Oaxaca to be macerated in Danish spirit and bottled in Copenhagen before returning to Mexico is enough to wear out anyone’s shoe leather.
